Wikipedia ,the world’s leading online encyclopedia, is all set to launch its own search engine and challenge the giant ,Google.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has said that its upcoming search engine – codenamed Wikiasari – will use the same user-driven technologies as Wikipedia, which allows anyone with an internet connection to create and edit entries.Mr Wales said this focus on human judgment was far more effective than using computer algorithms such as those adopted by Google.

In deciding how high up a particular link appears on a search query, Google’s algorithms rank sites based on how many other websites link to it.
Mr Wales’ approach, however, is to use the method that has to date proved so successful for Wikipedia – let humans pick the sites that are most relevant to particular queries..

But while this approach may increase the relevance of search results, as with all user-driven web initiatives, it would open the service up to unintended manipulation.

Wikipedia, for example, has come under fire on numerous occasions this year for plagiarism and publishing inaccurate information. This sort of vandalism is difficult to remove until after it has been spotted by other users.
It is unclear how Mr Wales plans to deter vandals who would seek to manipulate Wikiasari’s search rankings, but the incentive to do so is undoubtedly present.

The project is scheduled to publicly launch next year, aided in part by financial backing from online retailer Amazon. But despite being an investor, Amazon will not be involved in developing or running the search engine.

Its a giant v/s mammoth,what ya say.

Less than a week to go for the consumer rollout of Windows Vista, Microsoft’s latest operating system in more than five years. The company has also got a few other firsts up its sleeve this time: a new version of its productivity software suite – Office 2007 — is also being released simultaneously.

some little-known facts about Vista  …

Billion Baby
Microsoft spent $6 billion in developing Vista. The company reported net income of $ 12,599 million in the year 2006.

Surging Memory
The impending launch of Windows Vista is driving strong growth in sales of DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips. Reports suggest that a fully functional installation of Windows Vista will need almost twice as much memory as Windows XP to function smoothly. Though Microsoft claims 512 MB is adequate for a basic installation, some reviews recommend 2 GB as a reasonable amount if you really want to harness Vista’s capabilities.

A report at MacScoop claims that according to leaked report from Apple, the final release of Boot Camp when released will cost users roughly $29 USD. Boot Camp has been available as a free public beta since early 2006 when Apple made its first transition to Intel processors. The software add-on allows x86 Mac users to install a fully working copy of Windows XP, which ran natively on their x86 Macs. Users who use Apple’s Boot Camp are able to install and separately boot a fresh copy of Windows.

While the report says that the source of the leak is not entirely sure about the final cost of Boot Camp, they are sure that Apple will be charging for the download. Those who have Boot Camp now can still continue to use the software, but Apple apparently will cease driver support for those who do not upgrade. The report also claims that Apple will officially support Windows Vista via Boot Camp when it is released.

Boot Camp is expected to make its official debut along with Apple’s next generation operating system, codenamed Leopard. The report also claims that Apple will be providing Leopard users with Boot Camp free of charge. Apple did make a comment in 2006 that Leopard will have Boot Camp fully integrated. Leopard is expected to make an official showing this coming spring.

Its a bad news for me and my friend Ashutosh.

The I-phone created so much hype, everyone liked it.And the other underrated phone which got the best design award of 2007 is the LG KE850(have you ever heard about it).

The fact is both look the same.Did Apple copy the design and also copied the name from Cisco, or is it just coincidence.

But whatever it is, Apples phone will sell more than both LG and Ciscos combined.

Thanks to gizmodo,we have a picture and specifics of what appears to be the PlayStation Portable 2. Codenamed Cobalt. Is it the actual product or a figment of an over active (and thoroughly bored) imagination? Can’t say as of now, but we’ll keep you updated as and when we hear anything; in the meantime take a look at the specifics:

  • All Metal & Ruggedized Rubber Build
  • 200% Brighter Screen
  • Dual Analog Controllers
  • Visual Battery Display
  • 8GB Flash Drive
  • Wifi (a,b,g)
  • Bluetooth V.2 (A2DP, AVRCP)
  • Firmware 4.07

Stay tuned for the truth…

Gmails provides every user 2gb space. Not everyone can fill that big a space by mails. Here is a nice application which allows you to use that space and store some important files.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag’n'drop files to.

You can get the sotware here

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There’s still a number of limitations of the file-system. Since the tool hooks up with the free Gmail Service provided by Google, changes in the Gmail system may break the tool’s ability to function. I cannot guarantee that files stored in this manner will be accessible in the future.
